General FAQs

Each MicroTally® sampler product utilizes the same underlying polyolefin cloth technology that has been evaluated by the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and implemented by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) for official pathogen sampling. The material is scientifically proven to deliver reliable, legally defensible, and highly reproducible microbiological data.
-
No. There have been no provisions made for washing and resterilizing MicroTally® samplers. They were developed with the intention of being single-use devices. The impact of trace residuals is unknown.
-
The sampler is constructed from a specially engineered, non-woven spun polyolefin polymer fabric. This advanced, food-contact-safe material is physically optimized to effectively capture and retain surface moisture, biofilms, and microbial pathogens upon direct contact.

-
The MicroTally® sampling system:
- Samples a much greater proportion of the product
- Increases sampling representativeness
- Eliminates product loss from sampling
- Cuts hazardous waste disposal costs
- Lowers sampling time and injury risks
- Minimizes the volume of enrichment media needed
-
MicroTally® products are designed for non-destructive surface sampling across a wide range of solid food matrices and processing environments where microbial pathogens or indicator organisms on external surfaces are of concern.
Supported sample matrices and applications include:
Floor & Pathway Footprint Sampling: Sample facility floors, poultry litter, and field soil.
Raw Beef & Meat Trim: MicroTally® spun-polymer cloth is USDA-FSIS evaluated and approved for sampling beef trim, carcass surfaces, and manufacturing trimmings for pathogens and indicator organisms.
Produce & Cut Produce: Scientifically proven effective for surface pathogen capture on leafy greens (such as lettuce), cut produce processing lines, and whole produce.
Environmental & Equipment Surfaces: Direct surface swab sampling of processing machinery, conveyers, food-contact equipment, and hard-to-reach plant infrastructure.
-
MicroTally® samplers should not be used on:
Products with internal contamination: Items where the suspected contamination is trapped inside and not accessible on the surface.
Certain fine powders and liquids: Substances that can fill or clog the sampler's capture sites, interfering with the process.

MicroTally® Swab Sampler FAQs
-
USDA/FSIS has issued a Letter of No Objection covering:
- Beef trim pathogen and indicator organism sampling via MSD™ and CSD™ sampling
- Poultry pathogen and indicator organism sampling using the MicroTally® Mitt
In addition, USDA/FSIS recently named “Polyolefin Cloth” – our MicroTally® Swab sampler – as their official pathogen sampling method for their in-plant inspectors.
-
Yes, as shown in this video.
-
Yes, see Manual Sampling Device (MSD™) testing. However, we highly recommend using the MicroTally® Mitt for this purpose as it offers a significantly enhanced sampling experience tailored to meet your needs.

MicroTally® MicroMitt™ Sampler FAQs
-
The samplers are individually packaged and sterilized via standard manufacturing protocols to maintain absolute aseptic integrity. Each case (SKU: MT-MM100) contains 150 individually overwrapped samplers, each supplied with a dedicated sterile, leak-proof, and tear-resistant sample transport bag featuring a white write-on area for convenient laboratory labeling.
-
- Enhanced Recovery: The pioneering spun polymer fabric exerts superior physical friction to dislodge biofilms and trap pathogens.
- Time Savings: It covers a larger sampling area in less time compared to traditional sponges. For quantitative analysis, a simple vertical and horizontal swipe across a 1 sq. ft area can be performed accurately without requiring a separate template.
- Cost Efficiency: It reduces shipping weights significantly and lowers overall consumable waste, decreasing the chemical and biological waste footprint of the facility.
-
Yes. Each MicroMitt™ sampler comes pre-saturated with a food-safe, broad-spectrum neutralizing buffer. This allows the device to effectively neutralize residual sanitizers on recently cleaned equipment, making it suitable for both pre-sanitation and post-sanitation monitoring.
-
The device features a unique, patent-pending four-finger configuration that accommodates a gloved hand while leaving the thumb free for optimal grip. This ergonomic design leverages the natural dexterity and maneuverability of the human hand, enabling precise contact with hard-to-reach areas and confined spaces where traditional flat sponges fall short. Furthermore, the MicroMitt™ sampler is dual-sided, allowing users to maximize surface coverage without compromising sample integrity.
-
The MicroTally® MicroMitt™ sampler is designed for both food-contact and non-food-contact surfaces across various sectors, including meat, poultry, and produce processing environments. It is ideal for:
- Routine sanitation monitoring using indicator organisms (e.g., aerobic count, coliforms, Enterobacteriaceae).
- Pathogen environmental monitoring programs targeting organisms such as Listeria and Salmonella.
- Sampling highly irregular, contoured, or small surfaces such as door knobs, switches, handles, and equipment crevices.
- Aggressive scrubbing and direct sampling of small whole fruits, including apples and peaches.
-
The MicroTally® MicroMitt™ sampler (Catalog Number: MT-MM100) is an innovative manual surface sampling device designed for superior microbial collection in environmental monitoring programs. It serves as a highly efficient, direct-contact alternative to conventional sampling sponges or sponge-on-a-stick methods.
MicroTally® MicroCap™ Sampler FAQs
-
In almost all cases, pre-moistened MicroCap™ samplers provide greater recovery than dry, and in no case do they provide lower recovery. If in doubt, premoisten. The liquid serves as a transfer medium for microbial recovery.
-
Use the smallest hole size that will fit comfortably over the flange on top of the distribution cone (China Cap) of the weigh scale. On many higher-volume lines, this requires the 8-inch hole.
MicroTally® MicroBroom™ Sampler FAQs
-
Trials did not show any advantage. The interior of heads of Romaine had sufficient moisture to transfer microbes effectively to the sampler without requiring additional pre-wetting.
-
There is no physical limitation. However, if they are sampled together, they effectively become one lot that should be accepted or rejected together.
-
This is not recommended. It is generally easier to snap the bulk of the shaft off while returning the sampler to the bag than to remove it later. It also reduces the risk of cross-contamination. If it is not removed, the lab will probably want to remove it to reduce the risk of bag puncture during handling which presents its own challenges.
-
The MicroBroom™ sampler and extension handle were designed for aggregated sampling of Romaine lettuce to access the interior where pathogens are expected. Additionally, it is anticipated that these samplers will find other uses in automated sampling applications of Romaine and other products. The extension handle makes the sampler useful for reaching into and under where it is difficult to sample. Users will find ways to use these samplers that go beyond the original expectations.
