MicroTally® Swab

$252.00 per case; 100 Swabs/Case

Product Description

The MicroTally® Swabs serve a broad range of purposes for aggregated surface sampling. They can be utilized for both continuous and manual sampling methods. These swabs are frequently employed in the sampling of Salmonella, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), E. coli O157:H7, and other indicator organisms on beef trimmings. Following manufacturing, both the swab and the accompanying bag undergo sterilization. After sampling, the swab can be returned to the bag for cultural enrichment. To streamline the sampling process, the wired seal design of the bag ensures content protection and facilitates effortless bag opening and closing.

MicroTally® Swabs meet all the parameters specified in the FSIS document (FSIS log no. 15-SMP-1064-N-B) and, when used as directed, provides an organism recovery rate greater than or equivalent to the typical N60 method for detection (Wheeler & Arthur, 2017*).

The MicroTally® Swab is a sterile cloth sampling device made of non-woven spun polymer, specifically engineered to effectively capture and retain surface bacterial pathogens. It has dimensions of 24″ x 8″ and is individually packaged in a sterile sample bag. This sterile wire-closure bag is leak-proof, tear-resistant, non-toxic, non-reactive, and transparent, and it includes a white write-on area for easy labeling.

Suggested uses for MicroTally® Swab include:

  • Validated for both manual and continuous sampling of beef trim, serving as a replacement for N60 and N60+ sampling methods.
  • Highly beneficial for sampling various meat products, including carcasses, for routine monitoring of indicator organisms or pathogens.
  • Particularly advantageous for sampling large areas, especially when conducting presence/absence testing.
  • Versatile in its application, facilitating aggregated sampling of a wide range of products.
  • Beef
  • Pork
  • Poultry
  • Leafy greens, especially when used continuously or when product is sampled batch-wise by tumbling.
  • Sampling leafy green during harvest
  • Sampling leafy greens pre-harvest
  • Sampling soil
  • Flour and other low moisture products
  • Whole fruit, especially when moistened.
  • Bean sprouts
  • USDA/FSIS approved for pathogen sampling of beef trims, endorsed for both manual and continuous sampling approaches.
  • Compatible with MicroTally® Cartridge (MT-D140) and MicroTally® Baseplates (MT-D130), enabling inline continuous sampling.
  • Made in the USA under USDA license, MicroTally® Swabs are food-grade non-woven polyolefin, adhering to stringent standards to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Offers an efficient and user-friendly testing experience with a typical enrichment broth volume of 200 mL and a minimum enumeration dilution volume of 100 mL.
  • A versatile sampling tool suitable for sampling both food contact and environmental surfaces.
  • Tamper-proof design for added security.

MicroTally® Swab FAQs

  • Does FSIS approve of MicroTally® sampling for food products?

USDA/FSIS has issued a Letter of No Objection covering:

    • Beef trim pathogen and indicator organism sampling via MSD™ and CSD™ sampling
    • Poultry pathogen and indicator organism sampling using the MicroTally® Mitt

In addition, USDA/FSIS recently named “Polyolefin Cloth” sampling as their official pathogen sampling method for their in-plant inspectors.

  • Is it necessary to use both MicroTally® Cartridges and MicroTally® Baseplates to implement CSD or continuous sampling?

Yes, as shown in this video.

  • Can the MicroTally® Swabs be used independently of the MicroTally® Cartridges and MicroTally® Baseplates?

Yes, see MSD testing. However, we highly recommend using the MicroTally® Mitt for this purpose as it offers a significantly enhanced sampling experience tailored to meet your needs.

  • Where can I find your policies?

You can find all our policies including Shipping, Refund & Exchange, and Privacy Policies here.

  • How long will it take to process my order?

Once your order is placed, you will receive an email providing you with the official estimated order fulfillment time. • What problems does the MicroTally® sampling system address?

    The MicroTally® sampling system:

    • Samples a much greater proportion of the product
    • Increase the sampling representativeness
    • Eliminates product loss from sampling
    • Reduces hazardous waste disposal costs
    • Reduces sampling time and injury risks
    • Reduces the amount of enrichment media needed

  • On which sample matrices can MicroTally® products NOT be used?

MicroTally® spun polymer cloth is not intended for some fine powders or liquids that may fill capture sites, interfering with the sampling process.

MicroTally® spun polymer cloth should not be used if the suspected contamination is inherently internal to the product, and therefore not accessible for sampling.

  • On which sample matrices can MicroTally® products be used?

MicroTally® products are intended for use on any solid food where the presence of microbial pathogens or toxins, on the external surface of the product, is of concern.

MicroTally® spun polymer cloth as a part of the manual and continuous sampling devices, has been approved by the USDA for beef trim sampling for pathogens and indicator organisms.

MicroTally® spun polymer cloth has also been scientifically proven effective in sampling bacteria on produce such as lettuce.
